CHAPTER FOURTEEN

MICAH

Mr. Sikes, in the lodge parking lot, with the shotgun scare tactics.

My stomach churns as I cut the ignition and shift to face Gilly. I paste on a huge smile that I hope reaches my eyes, aiming for upbeat and amped as I say, “All righty. We’re finally here. Ready to do this?”

I’m met with a pair of big sparkly brown eyes as she tucks her lower lip between her teeth and unbuckles her seat belt.

“Yup!”

She swings the door wide open and rushes into Harper’s waiting arms. Harper sweeps Gilly up in a bear hug and twirls her around.

“Can you believe we’re all here together? Eek!” They squeal in delight. “Just wait until you see the hot chocolate bar. And the arcade! Oh my gosh, when Hunter gets here, you two are going to have so much fun. They’ve added an entire new area for kids. Table tennis, darts, video game consoles and board games. Even, The Claw!”

Gilly bounces from one shiny leather combat boot to the other, unable to bottle up the excitement that filled the car with Christmas carols the full drive.

“I’ve never beat that stupid claw game but…”

They unleash another bout of excited squeals.

“All right, all right,” Declan says good-naturedly, exiting the car. “Let’s save some of that excitement for the slopes.” He slaps a hand on the roof of my car and leans down. “My man! After a five-hour drive and countless are-we-there-yets, are you ready to jump into this fun-filled weekend with both snow boots?”

We both laugh. Between Harper and Gillian, they are going to run us ragged with events and activities.

“Nope.” A laugh plumes out of me. “I’m not even remotely prepared. I’m tired just thinking about all the tiny Santa emojis on Harper’s daily itineraries.”

“Well…” Another laugh works its way over his shoulders as he tosses a lovesick glance to Harper. She’s still holding tight to Gilly but staring at Declan with hearts in her eyes. “We do all sorts of shit we don’t want to for the people we love, right?”

I nod and the corners of my mouth tug downward.

“Yeah, and—”

I’m just about to tack on some funny euphemism to his comment when behind him, Nadia exits from the backseat of his car. She’s wearing jeans and a thick orchid-colored peacoat with a black scarf tucked into the lapels.

As she tucks loose blond hairs behind her ear and bends her knees to wave at me through the window, I know. By her uncertain smile and the wide-eyed blue stare, fixed on me. By the way she tugs and loosens her scarf around her neck. By the sexy-as-hell way she bites her lower lip.

Declan’s statement hits the nail on the head.

Yesterday, Nadia and I shared a kiss that knocked down all the walls I’d built around my heart. I was ready to do whatever she asked if it meant we’d have a second chance. If we could pick up where we left off beneath the boardwalk that summer night in August. She’d said the secret admirer notes didn’t matter if they weren’t from me.
